A Multilingual Nation

Sri Lanka is a multilingual nation where language reflects the country's rich cultural diversity and history. The Constitution of Sri Lanka recognises Sinhala and Tamil as the country's official languages, while English serves as a widely used link language connecting communities and supporting international communication.

Sinhala

Sinhala is the most widely spoken language in Sri Lanka and is the mother tongue of the majority of the population. It belongs to the Indo-Aryan language family and has a recorded history dating back more than two thousand years.

Sinhala is used throughout government, education, media, and daily life, and is written using its own unique script that forms an important part of Sri Lanka's cultural heritage.

Tamil

Tamil is one of Sri Lanka's official languages and is spoken by Tamil communities across the island. It belongs to the Dravidian language family and is one of the world's oldest living languages with a rich literary tradition.

English
