Diverse Landscapes

Sri Lanka's geography can be broadly divided into three distinct regions: the coastal plains, the central highlands, and the dry and wet zones.

The coastal belt surrounds much of the island and is home to golden beaches, lagoons, mangroves, and vibrant fishing communities. In contrast, the central highlands rise dramatically towards the centre of the island, where cool temperatures, rolling hills, waterfalls, and tea plantations create some of Sri Lanka's most iconic scenery.

The country is further divided into wet and dry climatic zones, each supporting unique vegetation, agriculture, and wildlife.

Mountains, Rivers and Nature

The Central Highlands form the geographical heart of Sri Lanka and are recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The country's highest mountain, Pidurutalagala, rises to 2,524 metres above sea level near Nuwara Eliya.

Sri Lanka is home to more than one hundred rivers, the longest being the Mahaweli River, which flows for approximately 335 kilometres across the island. These rivers play a vital role in agriculture, hydroelectric power generation, and water supply.

The island's diverse geography supports a wide variety of ecosystems, including tropical rainforests, cloud forests, grasslands, wetlands, and national parks that provide habitats for elephants, leopards, sloth bears, whales, and hundreds of bird species.

A Land of Natural Beauty

From the palm-fringed beaches of the south and west coasts to the scenic tea-covered hills of the central highlands, Sri Lanka offers an extraordinary range of landscapes within a relatively short travelling distance.

Visitors can experience ancient forests, dramatic mountain viewpoints, cascading waterfalls, wildlife-rich national parks, and pristine coastlines, often within a single journey across the island.

This unique geographical diversity has earned Sri Lanka a reputation as one of the world's most beautiful and accessible island destinations.
