ANCIENT CITIES & HERITAGE

Discover Over 2,000 Years of History

Sri Lanka is home to one of Asia's oldest continuous civilisations, with a recorded history spanning more than 2,500 years. Ancient kingdoms, magnificent temples, royal palaces, sophisticated irrigation systems, and sacred religious sites continue to stand as remarkable reminders of the island's rich past.

From the ancient capitals of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa to the iconic Sigiriya Rock Fortress and the Sacred City of Kandy, Sri Lanka offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore centuries of history, culture, and architectural achievement.

Today, many of these historic landmarks are recognised as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, attracting travellers, historians, archaeologists, and cultural enthusiasts from around the world.

Ancient Kingdoms

Sri Lanka's ancient kingdoms played a vital role in shaping the country's culture, religion, and identity. The cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa served as royal capitals for centuries and became centres of governance, learning, trade, and Buddhist civilisation.

These ancient cities are renowned for their impressive stupas, monasteries, palaces, reservoirs, and engineering achievements, many of which continue to inspire visitors today.

Sacred Temples & Cultural Heritage

Religion has played a central role in Sri Lankan society for more than two millennia. The island is home to many sacred Buddhist, Hindu, Christian, and Islamic sites that continue to attract pilgrims and visitors throughout the year.

Among the most significant landmarks are the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy, the ancient temple complexes of Anuradhapura, and the magnificent cave temples of Dambulla, which contain some of the finest examples of Buddhist art in Asia.

UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITES

Sri Lanka is home to eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, reflecting the country's exceptional cultural and natural heritage.

These include the Ancient Cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya Rock Fortress, the Sacred City of Kandy, Dambulla Cave Temple, Galle Fort, the Central Highlands, and the Sinharaja Forest Reserve.

Together, these sites showcase the remarkable diversity of Sri Lanka's history, architecture, religion, and natural beauty.
